The Red Scarf

This image of Anna Pavlova was painted by John Lavery in his studio in 1910/11 (I’ve seen reference to the two dates so maybe it was over the winter period). This particular painting is in the exhibition of the Glasgow boys at Kelvingrove Museum-he studied in Glasgow at that ‘special’ time.

It's enchanting one of the brighter images in the group of paintings on display, particularly with the addition of the red scarf.

I read many years ago that Pavlova inspired the choreographer Frederick Ashton to get involved in dance, after he watched her on stage when he was a boy. I also noticed recently in the drama of Mr Selfridge on TV that she was referred to as a friend of his too.

She was responsible for many firsts but perhaps most famous for performing the dying swan in swan lake.

“Dancing is creating a sculpture that is visible only for a moment.”
