Penny Black

Today is the 175th anniversary of the penny black, the world's first adhesive postage stamp. It went on sale on 1 May 1840, in London post offices only to start with, and was official from 6 May.
My stamp collection, stored in a cupboard but much neglected for many years, includes this penny black. They can be quite valuable but this one seems to have been cut quite close to the print and I think they should have a margin. One day I will get it looked at. Meanwhile I will marvel that this little scrap of paper has survived all those years.
