Dinner
I took this from the car as I was driving back to the farm after a meeting in town today. It's not a very clear picture - in my mind's eye it's great.... I was passing 'goat corner' where goats and their herders wait all day for a sale, then the poor goat is taken off (still alive) for it's fate.
My meeting was with the two head-teachers for the schools selected to receive food through the project I've set up to provide food for school children. The discussions in the meeting were sobering to say the least, the country has enough maize to last 8 weeks and it is illegal to import maize (banned by the Agricultural minister). The lack of rain is predicted to last two years, a prominent political commentator is calling for a state of emergency to be declared.
Even on the farm, the effects of the current situation are becoming evident, if more rain does not fall, the damn will not provide water for the year. Cattle prices, normally at their highest at this time of year are 20% below the same time last year and the poor rains mean they have not put on the weight expected.
As my mother in law says, life in Africa is hard.
