Panteidal Farmhouse, near Aberdovey

Woke this morning to the momentous news that the British electorate had voted by a narrow margin to leave the European Union. It was not the result that I wanted and not the result I was expecting to hear when we went to bed last night when a narrow Remain result was expected.

Whatever you think about the referendum a decision has been made and we all have to live with the consequences. It is incumbent on our politicians to bring about the benefits of leaving and create a better place than we have now.

There is no looking back, not a time for going over old ground. A decision has been made, whatever people's motivation. This referendum has deeply divided the country. It's not a question of win or loose, those in power have a duty to unify a divided people, engaging and convincing the leavers.

It's not a time for triumphalism by Leave campaigners, but we have seen it and heard it. People are entitled to their opinion - on both sides. We must work together to move forward.

Mind you the Leave campaigners have made some pretty high risk promises to which they will be held to account for by everyone in the coming weeks and years.

My biggest regret is that we had the referendum at all. Political infighting, personalities, intransigence, unwillingness to bring about change have all contributed to where we are today and have led to the end of David Cameron's political career and probably that of George Osbourne. Yet I hope key Remain people are included in the governance of the country as we move forward, if only for the sake of unity.

What will happen to the Union, who knows. I can see Scotland wanting another referendum, but what about Northern Ireland or indeed London? Uniting people on opposite sides of the fence will be challenging enough but will there still be a United Kingdom in the coming years?

In other news today we travelled back to Kent from our base at Panteidal Farm house Aberdovey, a slow but ultimately less troublesome than we expected when travelling on a Friday and especially around the M25 on a Friday afternoon.

A quick turnaround in Kent tomorrow before we point the car northwards to Edinburgh on Sunday where we will be for a family wedding on Tuesday. The wedding date was arranged after we'd booked to go to Wales, hence the quick turnaround. Will need to go to the allotment. And squeeze my birthday into tomorrow.
