Azores - Terceira

Azores day one. Terceira, the third island to be discovered.
We arrived in Sao Miguel late last night, put our heads down for a few hours and then took an internal flight to Terceira very early. Cute little plane - a bit Snoopy and the Red Baron !

First stop, a tour of the area round the airport, very old fashioned agricultural and charming. On to Praia de Vitoria, stunning buildings in sparkling white and splendid colours.

Next - to the huge volcanic crater, high, high up in the wind. My blip. Fantastic.

On to more lovely scenery, coastal settings with amazing volcanic rock, with villages with colourful churches and even one with ancient silver and Italian frescoes.

Next into the heart of the volcano. Stunning caves with amazing colours, set amid the Pristina Forest, the ancient indigenous forest.

I could continue - brilliant lunch, cheese factory, black granite and lava coast line. Crazy lava pools.

My Madeiran friends had recommended the Azores. I knew it would be good but this is spectacular.

And the day ended with a blissful swim in an infinity pool !
