Wenatchee Washington State (known for apples)

We left Seattle this morning and headed east into Washington state following highway 29. We were heading for the town of Wanatchee (US capital of apples). On the way we took a little detour to a town called Leavenworth.
This is an astonishing place, originally a logging town, after the timber trade had a down turn the town had to find some way to become viable and came up with the idea of becoming a theme town and the theme they chose was 'Bavaria'! Although no original connection to Germany all the buildings now look very Germanic and the streets are wegs rather than roads/streets, inns all have red and white check curtains and flower boxes abound. We had a piece of appel strudel and left!
Wenatchee is a perfectly ordinary and pleasant American small town with a large river, the Colombia, running through it. To get down to the river one has to cross a lot of rail lines and one does this by walking along this great covered pedestrian bridge.
