Today's the day ....................... to go up the drawbridge

A visit today to the 'finest castle never built'  that I blipped on Monday.  And if King Edward I of England hadn't run out of money or got diverted keeping the Scots at bay, it really would have been pretty amazing. 

Here's a few facts about it -
Work began in 1295 and cost £14,500(about £6.5M in today's money).  The castle was planned to be concentric - a castle within a castle - with five suites of sumptuous accommodation.  The prosperous Welsh town of Llanfaes and its residents were moved to Newborough in the west of Anglesey to make way for the castle and its town.  The name 'Beaumaris' comes from Norman French - beau mareys - meaning 'fair marsh'.

In 1987, along with Caernarfon, Conwy and Harlech, Beaumaris Castle was recognised as a World Heritage Site ............................
