Equinoctial

I've been referring to this creature as Elma's Hallowe'en cactus for years, since that's when it always seemed to flower - but it suddenly put out a lot of buds a couple or three weeks ago. Maybe something to do with length of daylight hours, rather than temperature? It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma (as I recently discovered that saying actually goes.....).
