'The Ladybird Book Of The Night Sky'
There's a couplet in Lou Reed and John Cale's lovely 'Open House' that runs "It's a Czechoslovakian custom my mother passed on to me/ Give people little presents so they'll remember me", which makes the act of giving someone a spontaneous gift sound a little cynical. Actually, I love it. It doesn't have to be big or expensive - or cost anything at all - it's a joy to surprise a friend with something that you know they will enjoy.
This evening I met my friend Dom for a drink in the Shepherds' Hall Ale House, where he gave me a copy of 'The Ladybird Book Of The Night Sky'. I was thrilled with it; not only interesting but, published in 1965 and costing two and six, it has the layout, font, and illustrative style I remember from my youth. (The photo is from a page about looking at the face of the sun.)
As always, we had an enjoyable evening, and I was keen to hear more about the whole process of publishing a book with Unbound (not that I think my novel will ever be finished). If you're interested in Dom's book, you can read about it here.
