Celebrating

We’re celebrating this weekend. The occasion is an anniversary of which I was reminded only today.
And what are celebrating —  my diary tells me that it is 14 years to the day that I left full time working for retirement.
True, I did have the privilege of nine months of  ‘gardening leave’ leading into formal retirement.     Not that my time has been laid back in that time since then . I well recall in my first week of official retirement  receiving a telephone call inviting me to lunch and they say there’s no such thing as a free lunch!
I accepted, and very quickly learned there isn’t.   The conversation from  my hosts went something like: “We have a little problem, and we think you might have some time on your hands and be able to help us!”
My hosts at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club were looking for someone to take on the role of producing a member magazine, subsequently masterminding their website and other publications.  My working life in journalism and  newspaper and magazine publishing and already a member of the Yacht Club put me in pole position for the role.
Again, I accepted the challenge for the voluntary (?) role, and the intervening 14 years is very much something I found myself taking in my stride.

So that reminder in my electronic diary on my phone today is certainly adequate reason to share a glass of bubbles!
