Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2018 Friday — Elephant Seal

As we walked the shore of San Simeon Cove today we found two elephant seals on the north side of the cove and then we walked the other direction toward and under the pier and on the shore south of the pier found two more elephant seals. The docents from the elephant seal reserve about 4 miles north of San Simeon come and make a large circle around each seal with a series of driftwood sticks stuck in the sand. The seals blend right into the sand and actually use their flippers to throw sand onto themselves and we don’t even see them until we are quite close and then notice the sticks. The seals actually look dead, but then they move and it becomes more than apparent that they are very alive.

After walking the shore we stopped at the Cambria community farmers market to get soup from Stephanie. Today’s flavors are “spring” minestrone and split pea. We purchased two jars of the minestrone. Stephanie is quite convinced that we are in spring because we’ve had no rain.

Then a quick stop at the grocery store in Cambria to bring a few things back to the house, and finally the beautiful drive back to Cayucos.
