Buffalo time

July 1, and the first Sunday of the month. Time for Romsey Farmers’ Market and as ever the burger stall specialising in serving freshly cooked buffalo burgers is the popular attraction.

The buffalo are reared in Hampshire but are a call back to the great Indian water buffalo originating in Asia.

The farmer is proud of its 250-strong herd and says the buffalo is highly valued as a reliable and hard working draft animal, as well as a producer of rich creamy mile and excellent meat.

They have been rearing water buffalo in this part of Hampshire for 17 years and are regulars at the farmers markets in Romsey and Winchester. Not just for burgers, but steaks, stewing cuts, roasting joints and mince as well.

But as the farm says: “Our commitment to sustainable, natural farming methods is rewarded with a flourishing ecosystem of flora, fauna, and wildlife. Sometimes the grass gets so long our buffalo get ‘lost’!.
