Oban

We first came to Oban in December 2014 to see Washington Irving play live and ever since then we're talked about visiting again. Last November, I finally got 'round to booking us another trip. Tempted though I was to book the Columba Hotel again, I found what looked like a lovely AirBnB up on the hillside, behind the harbour, and just below McCaig's Tower.

Thus, we set off from Kirkby Lonsdale just before ten-thirty, this morning, driving up the eastern side of Killington Reservoir to join the M6 and stopping off almost immediately at Tebay Services for coffee, as we always do, on this occasion supplemented by leftover Christmas cake. Yum.

We decided to do without the satnav and that was fine up past Carlisle and as far as just below Glasgow, during which time we were basically required to stay on one road, but then we overshot and consequently ended up coming into Oban via the A85. We were both totally happy with this; there was no hurry and it was a new road to try with beautiful scenery.

We arrived in the town just after four-thirty and had a little stroll around, ending up at the art shop so that the Minx could buy a little easel for her weekend art project. After that we found a harbour front bar and read our books for a while before we headed up to the AirBnB, which turned out to be every bit as lovely as it looked in the pictures. And such lovely attention to detail in every respect. I'd definitely recommend it.

And as it's Burns night, the Minx made us haggis, neeps, and tatties for dinner, which we preceded with a slightly truncated reading of the 'Address To A Haggis'. (I was hungry and my accent wasn't up to it.) It was delicious and we finished the evening with a glass of Oban malt whisky, which we bought from the distillery in town earlier on.
