"...and Dan Pearson"

This evening was the 'A' Level Musicians' Recital at St Mary's church in Kirkby Lonsdale. Lord, but it's a fine building: to describe it as magnificent barely does it justice, with its muscular stonework supporting vaulted ceilings, ancient yet still trustworthy woodwork, intricate sculptures and fine glass. Tonight, though, it looked all the more youthful and intimate for some sultry red lighting.

The evening was introduced as the "Sixth form... and Dan Pearson", as the little fella is only in year 11. He held his own, though, playing two long and intricate pieces on the guitar, one near the beginning and one towards the end.

He was maybe eight bars into the second piece when he stopped and apologised that his guitar was out of tune due to the temperature in the church before nonchalantly retuning his guitar by ear and starting over. It was incredible to watch him play.

It would be wrong to say I'm proud of him; that would imply I have something to do not only with whatever his natural ability but also the many, many hours he puts into practising. It'd be more accurate to say that I'm chuffed simply to be related to him.
