Ancient and modern

Or the tale of the model, photographer and the tourist!!!

A day in Nuremberg briefly visiting the site of Hitler’s Party Rally grounds and the Court building where the Nuremberg trials were held, before going uphill to the 11th century castle and medieval walls. Considerable restoration is taking place, so much of it is shrouded in scaffolding and wraps, and any hole in the ground has an archaeologist marking the finds and taking pictures.

The high position gives good views of the city. There was extensive damage during W11 and the historical buildings were rebuilt using the original stones and in the original style.

It is a busy city and known for it’s Christmas markets and Lebkuchen (gingerbread), amongst other things. We had to sample this local delicacy and buy some to take home.

I managed to photograph a wedding party and a cat in the market square. I always try to find these on every trip....not always easy!!! Also the model, which is a rare find. Didn’t envy the skimpy dress, as it was cold at that point of the day and a bit damp!! She didn’t appear to be concerned.

We are still traveling the Main -Danube canal and we listened to a very knowledgeable young man explain the history of its development, whilst we sailed during the afternoon. It is 171 kilometres long, with 16 locks, 11 going up and 5 going down. You can transit from the North Sea to the Black Sea ....a bit of a short cut, across the Continental Divide. Three of the locks are very high....24.70 meters. Building this canal was a massive feat of engineering.
