Barefoot technology

I can't tell you how excited I was when the postman delivered these yesterday. These are my new Vibram FiveFingers KSO Minimalist Women's Running Shoes.

Ever since reading Christopher McDougall's Born to Run, I've wanted to try barefoot running. I've bought into the theory that regular cushioned running shoes change the way our bodies are supposed to run and that this can cause a whole range of problems and injuries. We, as a species, are built to run. Why therefore do we need additional supportive or cushioned shoes?

I don't particularly want to go out without any shoe. The soles of my feet are too soft from years of wearing shoes that they'd be ripped to shreds! So I finally decided to try out the FiveFingers. They apparently strengthen toes, increase flexibility, improve balance and range of motion, and protect your feet. They're quite expensive shoes, so even to try them means considerable outlay. When I found some on amazon for half price, I jumped at the chance!

Apparently you need to transition into wearing them properly as it means you're using new muscles in your feet and lower legs. I've gotta say, they are strange to wear and my freakishly long toes feel a little cramped, but I'm determined to like them! I'll be wearing them around the house for a while to break them in and in a couple of weeks I'll venture out for a short run! I'll let you know how I get on - but eeeekkkk I'm very excited!
