Brecon and Merthyr Railway
Driving from Pontsticill to Merthyr Tydfil, this morning, we drove past an amazing viaduct, which I thought would, light permitting, make a great photo for today.
Happily, at the end of the afternoon, we finished up while it was still light and on the way back to Pontsticill we parked up at Pontsarn Bridge, so that I could walk along a path by the river to underneath the viaduct. It wasn't a great photo, to be honest, and the light was a bit crap. (See Extras, including two colourful flowers, alone amongst a landscape that was otherwise uniformly greens and browns.)
Once back in the car, the road rose steeply and doubled back so that we found ourselves on a bridge over the viaduct and we could now see what appeared to be an old railway line that had been converted to a path. (See third extra.) That theory was confirmed when we looked from the other side of the bridge and could see the old platform.
If we hadn't been quite so hungry, it would have been nice to walk down and look at the information board but the siren call of the pub won out.
We ate at The Red Cow Inn, which is a lovely, old, (genuinely) traditional pub, which might have been marred by the large TV screen but happily that was at the far end of the room from where we sat to eat. We shared a starter, which was pretty much standard pub quality and so we were unprepared for just how fantastic the mains were. We'd already said we'd like to come back but the food absolutely clinched it.
