What's in a name?

One of my Christmas presents was a subscription to ancestry.com. I think I'm hooked.
So far I've traced my family and my wife's family in America back to the early 1800s, including a Spanish American War veteran and an American Civil War veteran.
My family in Scotland have yielded mostly farmers, shepherds, ploughmen, that sort of thing. Fascinating.
