Beetham (again)
I enjoyed lunch at The Wheatsheaf so much yesterday that I decided to go back again today with Dan and Abi. We set off slightly ahead of schedule so I decided to take a scenic route, which backfired on me as the Whittington Road was closed just south of the Red Well Inn due to flooding. I knew it had rained a lot last night but not that much!
Anyway, we found another route and made our table just in time. Dan had nachos, Abi the 'fake hake', and I had a halloumi burger whose name somehow involved Honolulu (I don't know). Once again, the food was excellent.
We went home by a more direct route between Beetham and Kirkby Lonsdale, taking the road that runs past Beetham Nurseries. At the junction at the end of that road there was loads more flooding. It didn't affect us this time around but after so much sunny weather this year, I don't understand why it's flooding so quickly.
That said, a couple of years ago I had some meetings with a client for a project that didn't come to anything but one of the guys there was only part time and the rest of his week was spent as a consultant on flooding and water courses. He was really interesting and I'm sure that one of the things he told me was that the base of the water table is actually only a foot beneath the ground. If that's right, I guess it can fill pretty quickly.
