The old railway line

There are so many nice runs around Kirkby Lonsdale and one of those goes down to and across Devil's Bridge and then up around the back of High Casterton.

The top road runs just above and parallel with the old railway line, the stretch between what would have been the stations of Kirkby Lonsdale and Barbon. The line closed to passengers in 1954, although goods trains used it for another ten years.

There are numerous bridges over the line, one of which I crossed on my way back at lunchtime, today. I paused long enough to take this photo and to imagine standing here, maybe sixty years ago, as a stream train passed underneath or maybe headed down the line towards me.
