When you turn on the telly at lunchtime to watch a repeat of Top Gear on Dave, and find this displayed, you know something major has happened.
Knowing that the Duke of Edinburgh had been quite ill doesn’t make the news of his passing any less sad - he always seemed to be the sort of chap who would go on for ever.
I feel very sorry for the Queen - she will have to deal with her private grief whilst still being a monarch and head of state.
