Roudsea
We watched Gardeners World on TV on Friday evening, and they had a feature on how wonderful raised lowland peat bogs can be (so important to use peat free compost to protect this precious habitat, which also acts as a huge carbon sink). The feature was filmed at the Roudsea woodland and mosses National Nature Reserve. I checked the location, and it’s not far from Holly on the Hill, so that’s where we headed today.
It’s an absolutely fabulous place. The woodland is one of the best I have ever walked through, and as a bonus is a stronghold of the hazel dormouse (lots of dormouse boxes around). And the mossland (extra) is equally good - with, as a bonus, a pair of nesting ospreys, who fish for flatfish in the nearby Leven Estuary.
We’ll be back.
