Daycation

Our ‘Daycation Day’ meant a reasonably early start to make a packed lunch for three, plus a bag of goodies for Paddy, before heading off for the day.

First Stop: Golitha Falls near Liskeard are a series of cascades and waterfalls along a section of the River Fowey as it makes its way through the ancient oak woodland of Draynes Wood. Over the course of the falls the river descends 90 metres meaning the water is always fast flowing.
On To: The Hurlers Stone Circles, just five minutes away they consist of three late Neolithic or early Bronze Age stone circles arranged in a line, a grouping unique in England. The Hurlers Stone Circles are probably the best examples of ceremonial circles in the south west. According to legend, they are the remains of men petrified for playing hurling on a Sunday.
Next Stop: A short walk across the Moor from the Hurlers brings you to the Cheesewring, one of Cornwall's most amazing natural rock formations. Cheesewring is, in fact, a natural geological formation of granite slabs, formed by weathering over the course of hundreds of years. Large discs of stones are stacked atop each other in bizarre formations that seem as though they should not be able to stand upright without toppling.
On To: Dozmary Pool, disappointing, The mysterious Dozmary Pool has many myths and legends attached to it, not least its name; this is reputedly derived from 'Dozy Mary', an unfortunate girl who was murdered here. Among the other legends are that this is the resting place of King Arthur's sword, 'Excalibur' - this is the lake of 'Lady of the Lake'.
Going Past: King Doniert’s Stone, two richly carved pieces of a 9th century 'Celtic' cross, with an inscription commemorating Dungarth, King of Dumnonia in the south-west of Britain, who drowned in about AD 875.
Then To: Colliford Lake to finish our packed lunch. Collidord is Cornwall’s largest inland water with a vast surface area of 900 acres. The weather remained kind and it was a great place to sit quietly and enjoy the views, peace and quiet.
Last Stop: Cardinham Woods, more of a pit stop, stretch of the legs and a break for Paddy.

Home for pizza after a great day.
