So the big birthday finally dawned. And as surely as night follows day, the lass that had solemnly promised to go to school didn't. I was left in limbo until she did finally go in, and I arrived, heavily laden with attire, flowers and gifts.
First order of the day was to go for coffee and grab the necessary bits to feed the lass later. Home to break open bubbles and get dressed for lunch at Rhubarb/ Prestonfield.
It didn't disappoint. All dark wood and opulent purples; we were afforded a window seat; overlooking the gardens and peacocks. Food was excellent (smoked salmon, ham hough, hake coco beans, beef en croute, pavlova with sorbet, choc trifle). All exquisitely executed and served elegantly and unobtrusively. I didn't even mind the exorbitant wine! A great couple of hours together.
Then back for school chucking out; I went off to collect the dress from the dry cleaners and forage for the bro's misdirected bank cards whilst She bonded with the lass by taking her and two friends to the Edinburgh Dungeons... having just completed the ADHD / ADS form the other day, I wanted to go back and change at least 8 answers to indicate more extreme behaviours!!!
Back up at 7; we finally did presents- even though I was bidden that none were to be presented, obv I couldn't not...
Then Her childhood friend ( recently bereaved) came round. Despite obvious differences on their life paths, its crystal clear to see why they're still friends. 4 hours passed in a flash.
Alone at last, we sat til 1, looking back, peering forward until the conversation became more yawns than words.
If She had half as good a day as I did, then She'll be able to look back on Her 50th with much fondness
