Charity Golf Day

Thursday 30th September 2021

I took an extra day off today to take part in a charity golf day in aid of Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The day was dedicated in memory to a dear friend who died early last year. We took part in a similar day in 2019.

The golf was Texas Scramble. The weather forecast wasn't good, although when I watched the video of the forecast it looked like we might escape. We started with bacon sandwiches but as we looked out over the course the rain started. It stopped again just before we went out for the start. We arrived at our starting point ... and so did the rain. It was then jackets on, jackets off for the next hour. After that it was jackets on permanently. The rain kept stopping and starting but was predominantly raining ... and some of it was in biblical proportions. Just after half way we were drenched through to the skin and I had water sloshing in my shoes! We persevered even though we saw some teams quit and walk off. We played all 18 holes. When we got back we discovered that most teams had quit and the golf had been cancelled, but a few teams like us at the far end of the course hadn't heard the siren. We had persevered on the basis that we couldn't get any wetter so we might as well play, although the course was getting flooded in parts.

Having dried off and changed clothes we were just in time for the meal, which had been brought forward an hour. The meal was lovely and warmed us up (or was that the wine?). The auction and raffle followed. A lot of money was raised for a very good cause.

Because of the cancellation, the nearest the pin and longest drive competitions were also cancelled and they decided to award prizes to the first four teams instead. A calculation was done to work out the scores for all teams based on what was played. Our team came 4th and walked away with some prizes! :-)

Despite the weather, it was a most enjoyable day but now I am pleasantly tired so it is time for an early night.
