Mellow Yellow

Due to bad weather/new door fitting yesterday, this weeks “date day” was moved to today. And an excellent day it was. Bacon butties to start the day and then we took the scenic route over Shap to Penrith. Eventually found our way to Sainsbury’s car park, which gave us three hours free parking just on the edge of the town centre. Very pleasant strolling around in the sunshine and we found some interesting little shops. I managed to find a book I’d been trying to track down for a while and Mrs C spotted a little ornament in a jewellers window which she said she’d like as a birthday present - they even wrapped it up and put a gold bow on it for me!
As the sun was quite warm by the time we left, I put the roof down on the car and took the scenic route home via Keswick and Ambleside, stopping off in Grasmere en route. Mrs C wanted to visit the Wordsworth Daffodil Garden which is a patch of land near his grave, previously overgrown and neglected, that the church developed by asking people for contributions for either a stone with their name on (to make up the path) or some daffodil bulbs that would be randomly planted. The money raised would also go towards the ongoing maintenance of the church. A very pleasant place to wander around and I particularly liked the memorial overlooking the river. This is only a few yards from Wordsworth’s actual grave, which does look a bit shabby by comparison, it has to be said. Though, to be fair, the gravestone is nearly 150 years older than this memorial!
Toyed with the idea of visiting the Grasmere Gingerbread shop which is next door to the church, but couldn’t be bothered waiting in the queue which was out of the door and several yards down the street. We returned to the car, put the roof down again and made the most of the afternoon sun with a leisurely drive back to Kendal.
All in all, a grand day out.
