Life In Wales

Penmon Point

After breakfast we took the boys for a walk along the Belgian Promenade which is by the side of the Menai Strait.  The promenade was built by Belgian refugees in gratitude to the hospitality of the people of Menai Bridge who provided accommodation in the first world war.

It was a really interesting walk as we didn't realise how nice Menai Bridge is, it's always just been a place we've driven through after crossing one of the bridges onto Angelsey.  There are lots of little islands within the Menai Strait, including Church Island with the Church of St Tysillio, and there's also an island with a house on it with no other means of getting to it than by boat - see my extra.  As we walked back to the car through the woods, we saw a red squirrel which was nice as it's the first one Alan's seen.

We dropped the boys back at the cottage and then we drove to Penmon Point where we managed to park up on grass so we could get the awning out and we sat having lunch overlooking Penmon Lighthouse.  It was the perfect spot and it felt really warm in the sun.  On our way back we stopped off to look at the remains of Penmon Priory, and St Seiriol's Well.

We called back at the cottage to let the boys out and then went to Beaumaris beach to do a bit of beachcombing where we found a nice collection of seaglass and Alan even found a couple of old clay pipes, sadly they're not complete pipes, but still a nice find.

We had a nice relaxing evening at the cottage and Charles the owner popped round to check everything was ok for us which was nice - he really is a character but very nice.  I've also added an extra of the farmhouse where the owners live, it was his wife Mary's childhood home and they moved from London to live here permanently two years ago.
