Heritage

We passed through Goulburn today, 100 km north of Canberra, said to be the oldest inland city in Australia. Until 30 years ago the Hume Highway, linking Sydney and Melbourne, passed through the city centre. There is now a highway bypass and the city centre is a peaceful and relaxed place, with many significant heritage buildings.

The blip is of the Post Office, built in 1880-81, designed by NSW Government Architect James Barnet. And the Town Hall, designed by local architect EC Manfred, opened in 1887.

We diverted into Goulburn for coffee at the Paragon Cafe, immediately opposite these two buildings. The Paragon was opened in 1940, and is regarded as a classic example of a country town Greek cafe. It has been owned by people of Greek heritage from 1940 until today. And serves great coffee. See two extras.
