Can’t Take My Eyes Off You

Obviously, as a bass player, I would have preferred it if the hole had been at the end so I could have pretended to be Nick Massi - I’m not sure I could ever aspire to Frankie Valli’s vocal talents!
A great show last night. A pretty faithful telling of the Four Seasons/Frankie Valli story - not just the obvious highs, but also the lows as well. A few liberties taken with the timeline as regards some of the songs - for example, “December 1963 (Oh What a Night)” wasn’t written until 1975, but was sung in the part of the show about the early sixties, as that’s when the events referred to in the song actually occurred. Didn’t detract from the show and actually made sense in a weird sort of way. There was a warning about the use of “authentic 1950s New York language” which basically translated as liberal use of the f word! I’m all for originality but they probably could have dialled down the swearing a bit, without losing the impact or atmosphere of those scenes.
The musical numbers were superb. The chap playing Frankie Valli absolutely nailed his powerful falsetto and there were some great harmonies from the others. I knew most of the numbers but was surprised to learn that “Bye Bye Baby” was one of theirs - I only knew the Bay City Rollers version.
And who would have thought that nobody was willing to promote “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” on the radio and that writer Bob Gaudio would have to drag the executives to see Frankie performing it so they could see just how popular it was with the fans!
