Sunday: Hopkins

We went exploring outside of Belmopan today.  Belize does not have a huge road infrastructure - there are only three main roads, with smaller roads and dirt roads branching off them.  One of these roads is the absolutely stunning Hummingbird Highway which runs from Belmopan down to the south.

We drove down it for about an hour and half to Hopkins, a village on the Caribbean coast.  It’s the centre of the Garifuna, a people of mixed African and indigenous Central American ancestry who originally lived on St Vincent, before settling in Belize.

We walked along the beach which was very tranquil, although the amount of plastic is disheartening.  The water is quite dark brown due to the amount of sargassum that washes up.  It’s a problem that Belize is trying to figure out.

We had lunch while we were there.  In my case, some excellent quesadillas.  My plan is to eat my way through the cuisine of Belize.

And you can take it as read that we are swimming daily here……
