History
An evening of contrasts yesterday. A talk about the Georgian era followed by some rock and roll.
After rebuilding the fence (see yesterday’s blip), it was time to get dressed a bit more smartly and head off to Coronation Hall in Ulverston to hear a talk by David Harper of Bargain Hunt/Antiques Road Trip fame. The evening had been organised by the WI and was not open to the general public. Mrs C had bought tickets for us both and I was slightly intimidated when I arrived to find that I was one of only a very few men in the room and was surrounded by dozens of fearsome looking elderly ladies. Though, for clarification, I should state that Mrs C is neither elderly or fearsome looking.
I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to stay for the whole event as I also had a gig last night, just down the road in Barrow. I reckoned I should be able to enjoy the talk and then nip off once the book signing or q&a started. As it happened, the talk started early and everything was finished not long after 8pm. We weren’t due to start the gig until 10.30, so I had plenty of time to get there and get set up.
The talk was all about the Georgians and their role in our history. Very informative it was too, delivered in an enthusiastic style with plenty of humour. Obviously, the main purpose of the evening - as far as he was concerned - was to sell copies of his book on the subject, which was heavily promoted throughout.
I might take the “book review”, seen on his poster, with a pinch of salt though. It doesn’t mention any published source for the quote and I know Gyles Brandreth is a very good friend of Mr Harper! Having said that, the evening could certainly be described as “fun and informative” - albeit a little short - so maybe I should try and track down a copy in the library and decide for myself.
