Bike

We’d seen signs last week warning that the road through the centre of Kendal would be closed for part of today, but nothing to indicate why. The mystery was solved when we popped into town this morning for a coffee. It seems it was all part of Kendal’s Cycling Festival that has been taking place over the past few days. As far as I could tell, the road was closed at either end to enable people to test ride a variety of bicycles in a safe space. There was also a marquee in Market Place and various stalls in the yards nearby, all promoting some sort of cycling activity or a type of bicycle.
All well and good, but it seems to have been almost universally ignored as there weren’t many people around and those odd few taking test rides seemed to be cyclists already, as far as I could see. Looking around Market Place, I got the impression that this event was aimed at us non-cyclists, with a view to getting us out of our cars and on to a more environmentally friendly and healthier mode of transport. But, in the absence of an approach from any of the multitude of hi-vis wearing people milling around, I can’t be certain.
I think that the combination of a Bank Holiday and decent weather meant that tourists and locals alike had either headed off into to the Lakes to go walking - or cycling? - or had stayed at home to work - or sit - in the garden. Which is what we did this afternoon. It was very pleasant being outside in the warm sunshine, and just what we needed after a weekend of rushing around, including two gigs with the band.
The next few days are going to be very busy as well, with two trips to Chester and a Pensioners Club AGM to fit in before the weekend. And with three gigs booked for the band over that weekend, I’ll be glad of the extra Bank Holiday next Monday!
