Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

An exciting tram journey. Too exciting…

JR took Gill to the airport about 10am, she's off on the next leg of her holiday/work related conference. We've promised to visit her soon in Sydney!

I did a Covid test - negative, and when JR came back, she walked down town with Archie, while I got the bus and had my booster shot. We then took a tram down to Leith. This is very exciting for Edinburghers. It's been years in the making, dozens of businesses have shut up shop, it was £400 million over budget and five years overdue... which is par for the course for any big development in Scotland, I'm afraid.

The tram was mobbed! Standing room only. So we weren't the only ones going for a whirl! The Leith Port stop was rather further from the cafes than I'd hoped. And there was a biting north wind, coming directly from the Firth of Forth! But we made it to Toast, a favourite cafe I used to frequent when I was in the area for physio. It was mobbed, of course, but we got a seat. T'was very very noisy, with the added horror a VERY shouty woman right beside us, so it wasn't only Archie who sought a quieter table. We found a nice sunny quiet seat outside. The chap next to us, in full black leathers, finished his meal, carefully wiped down the table with his own wipes, set out all his art stuff, and proceeded to draw. It was a very realistic portrait of two men in black leather. I congratulated him on his skills. I am sure he will set great store by my endorsement…

We walked back to the tram, passing Sandy, whom I haven't sat beside for years.

We got the tram back to town. STILL busy, but we had a seat this time. All was going well until we stopped. And didn't start again. There had been a 'medical emergency’ in the next carriage, and we had to wait AGES for an ambulance, which of course, snarled up the whole tram system completely. They told us to move to the opposite tram, which could go back into town because there was a crossover at this stop. And people were needing to get to the airport!! Quite an exciting first jaunt...

JR and Archie walked home while I got the bus. They were home before me! We took Archie to the vet to check his eye. There are two teensy bits of the thread (suture) they used still sticking out alarmingly, but they said it could take a couple of weeks to melt away.

We're both all rather tired this evening. JR has a sore neck (slept wrongly on it), I have a sore arm (jab), but Archie's fine.
