Viviparous

Two short trips, one this morning and one this afternoon.

We visited Foulshaw Moss late morning. The boardwalk was alive with little young lizards as well as adults. Common lizards are also known as viviparous lizards because they ( usually) produce live young rather than eggs. They can also lose their tails to distract a predator, and then regrow them. We wondered if that had happened here as there appears to be scar tissue around a section of this individual’s tail.

Back to Holly for lunch, and then in the afternoon we visited the Lakeland Horticultural Society’s fabulous Holehird Garden above Windemere (extra). We were treated to glorious sunshine as we walked around and enjoyed the walled garden. We then had a look at the national collection of Astilbe held by the garden, before the weather completely changed and it bucketed down. The plants that are grown here are those that enjoy the very wet weather the Lake District experiences, which is just as well. We visited years ago in the Spring, but hadn’t been in Summer before. It’s beautiful at this time of year.
