Where am I?
To infinity and beyond! I’m at the Tate Modern, visiting Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms. Inside two small plywood rooms she has created beautiful infinite spaces with a few lights and some cleverly placed mirrors. She has serious mental health problems and yet is wonderfully creative and courageous. My friend G and I felt really moved, as well as disoriented, by being inside the rooms. You’re allowed about 5 minutes. The other room has one crystal chandelier which is infinitely repeated in every dimension. She wants viewers to experience being inside her art, rather than looking at it.
G and I travelled up early from Bristol - she was doing a day trip - I’m here for the weekend. We have both become Tate members - so of course we went for lunch in the members bar - which must have one of the best views in London. Sitting outside on the balcony, there’s nothing but the river between you and St Paul’s. My first extra is a reflection of this. The second is looking across to the city - you can see a bit of the Millenium Bridge, inexplicably closed, and a bit of the huge former power station which houses Tate Modern - just a few of the 4.2 million bricks. The city itself is getting so built up now that the distinctive buildings are no longer clear - where is the gherkin (Swiss Re building) for instance? Hidden. All just melding into one huge block of blocks. I guess greed and profits may be involved.
