The road to Antigua

I love this lunar type landscape. The more you observe the more you notice the subtle difference in the colours and the contours, walking is quite mesmerising, at least when you’re not looking at where to put your feet.

Today we were in the sparsely populated middle section of the island walking from Vega de Río Palmas to Betancuria, the former capital of the island. After a lunch stop, (benching followed by bought café con leche) we resumed the trail and walked another few miles to Antigua famous for its cheese museum which we did not visit. The minibus was there to meet us and we arrived in the tourist resort of Corralejo in the late afternoon with just enough time for a swim.

The hotel is a relaxed version of the one we left in Costa Calma, fuelled with Prosecco on arrival and an extensive evening meal including jelly beans and complementary vino from Ramblers (something to do with a less than smooth transfer which none of us noticed) left us in a skittishly frivolous mood. Good non sequitur conversation and the usual exchange of aspirational (in terms of physical risk) future travel plans. I think I might settle for the Academic Archers Conference, zero risk, with special guest Sunny Ormande, aka, Lillian Bellamy.
