Courtney Pine at Ronnie's
My daughter, Jen, and I went to Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in Frith Street, Soho, this evening. Courtney Pine, a legend of the UK jazz scene, was playing two shows to celebrate his 60th birthday and the reissue of his first album. It was my third visit to the atmospheric heart of the British jazz scene and the vibe there is great. Courtney Pine was in great form and his band was excellent. He's playing at the Cheltenham jazz festival in May. Jen and I will be there but not on the day Courtney Pine is playing, so it was good to see him this evening as a taster for our upcoming visit to Cheltenham. The main photo is a bit blurry but I took it a little surreptitiously as the gig was coming to an end, and it does show Courtney playing. The extra photo is of the vacated stage. It would be a struggle to get a big band on it but Ronnie Scott's is not a large venue, it's intimacy is very much part of its charm.
