Walk to explore Poznan
After breakfast we spent the day walking round Poznan. Starting with the Basilica and cathedral re-built to replicate the original, which was destroyed in WW11. So much history to discover. I loved the smaller cathedral, which was much less grand but was built on the grounds of a byzantine church. To think that Christians had been worshiping in this place for so long was special. We had a moment of joy with the smell of a bed of hyacinths and then proceeded past beautiful houses, finding it difficult to choose our favourite.
Next we made our way to explore the parkrun course. A really beautiful park with so much to see. We settled for a coffee and chatted to a lovely barister in a coffee bicycle who recommended that we visit the Kaiser's Palace. We headed that way with expert navigation by A.
The Palace was the newest and most recent castle in the world, built by the Kaiser in the 20th century. When we arrived we witnessed the end of a moving, military ceremony which appeared to be TV news as there were several cameras reporting on the event; more history which would be good to research when home. We found a great place for coffee in the Castle and enjoyed chatting about everything parkrun.
After a tiring and great exploration of the city we were glad to return to the hotel to freshen up before heading out to the square for our evening meal. Goose burger for me. Wow, a burger that I shall never forget. In contrast, I found even learning one word in Polish a real challenge, especially after a couple of glasses of beer. I enlisted the help of E. My target is to say 'thankyou' in Polish to the volunteers tomorrow. We shall see if I am successful.
