Kubb

Years ago a Danish friend gave us this outdoor game, sometimes nicknamed 'Viking Chess'. We moved house, stashed the box in the garden shed and forgot about it.
I heard Josh talking about Kubb the other day, and realised that he understood the rules (having, in fact, made a set himself a while ago). So when he, Ruth Jack, Marianna and all the grandkids came over for lunch today, we got it out and had a go. Here's Ruth lining up a shot, under Eben's watchful eye. Extras; Josh ponders the rules for laying out the pieces and Simone shares a laugh with Marianna.
It's a game that would be perfect on a stretch of sandy beach. It's fine in the garden too, and there were shouts of laughter as sticks flew and wooden blocks fell (or not).  We'd eaten Richard's delicious meat loaf and my lemon polenta cake by then, so we were ready for some outdoor time.
Meanwhile Frieda and Luca played about with the hose, watering plants and making potions. Simone alternated between her own special kind of rampaging about, and retreating for a cuddle.
All this was really intended as a belated 'post-birthday' get-together for Josh, who turned 38 last weekend.
Good times.
