Harbour
A day of planning and walking today. After listening to the rep at our welcome meeting, we booked an excursion to Vesuvius for Thursday. We could have done it ourselves, but we might not have been able to get an access slot to the crater, and the saving by doing it direct wasn’t that much anyway - especially when you factor in that our trip also includes lunch and wine tasting!
But we thought we would travel independently to the Amalfi coast as the organised excursions didn’t seem to add anything to what we could sort for ourselves. With that in mind, we headed down to the port. We’d just missed a shuttle bus so decided to walk. It’s not far but the first bit has no pavements and is quite steep.
But we survived, found the info we wanted and had a very nice lunch down by the harbour, where I took a picture of the old rowing club. Didn’t fancy walking back up the hill to the hotel in the afternoon sun, so we just meandered around Sorrento until the shuttle bus started running again - it shuts down between 1pm and 4.30pm. We found some lovely little shops which deserve a return visit, as well as discovering some great little exhibitions of art, photography and, the local speciality, marquetry. We may have to give in to temptation and buy a small inlaid wood box that really caught our eye in one of the shops.
Quite tired when we got back to the hotel - not surprising really when I discovered our wandering about actually totalled over five miles. No wonder my feet are a bit sore! Definitely staying in the hotel after dinner tonight and I suspect we won’t venture far tomorrow either. I feel a day by the pool coming on…
