A fountain without a fountain

At Fontaine de Vaucluse to see one of the largest resurgent springs in the world. The River Sorgue emerges from the base of an enormous cliff via a monumental spring when it is in flood - which is rarely in September. It's just too dry in summer.

The picture shows, if you look carefully, water in the cave. This masks a cavern hundreds of metres deep. Water from many miles works its way underground to emerge here. When in flood the water escapes from the cave over the lip in the foreground in a series of rapids. It must be a fantastic sight.

However a river does run through the village. This is fed by a series of tributary springs about 200 metres below the source. So the village itself is built by the river surrounded by high white cliffs. Magnificent.
