Driftwood
....about how I feel, how I spent the day. Washed up to rest on the shoreline amongst the warm white stones and wreckage where land meets sea. Waking up restless and anxious, full of energy to be expended. Bicycling a few miles South to the tip of the Island. Stowing the bike and walking back amongst the cool dappled light gloom of pine trees sloping down to a shallow stone beach littered with driftwood. Sunning against a boulder and reading a book as the tide rose around me and the shadows lengthened West.
Around dinner I got back and met Maggie, baking a ferocious storm of cookies. Cutting up some cucumbers from the garden drizzled in sea salt, pepper, and balsamic vinegar. We're heading to a potluck! Invited by a local boat crew, an environmental education schooner vessel that sails all around the San Juan's and Puget sound teaching natural history to all ages. Just my line of work. Hitch hiking in to meet Jim and Christina there and many other people besides. Walking amidst the most gorgeous sail boat meeting many friendly folk from the crew and other local farms while munching on all sorts of goodness while looking out. The deep blue waters of the islands one side and the white spires of many sail boats in high relief behind framing the harbor...
