New calf

In the night a calf was born.

Eric found her down in the tall grass at the edge of the pasture after Daphne, her mother refused to come up for milking. A tiny little thing still struggling to remain standing in the milk room. The withering umbilical cord still handing from its belly. New life and excitement on the farm. The bread and butter of this place is its handful of dairy cows. With a calf they can produce over 30lbs for most of the year. That is a lot of milk, all free range and organic fetching Jim and Christina up to $9/gallon.

I snapped this shot not of the new calf, I wasn't satisfied with my shots in the gloom of the barn, but instead of Rose the other resident calf just usurped by the new baby. Helping Vince move the turkeys in the pasture like most mornings and often Sonia, Rose, and Meatball, trail over to watch by the fence. My favorite thing about Rose is her shy sweetness and big expressive eyes.
