Post Op
Early rise for No 2 after fasting since 10 pm (on her request a chocolate Orange and Coke !) and a trip to ERI for a 7.30 am appointment.
After meetings with her surgeon and anaesthetist we finally made it to the pre-op stage about 11.45 am. By this time No 2 was gasping for a cup of tea! I was told that it would be a short op, but she didn't reappear for 3 hours. It turned out quite a serious injury. The trapezium was compressed and the bone pieces had to be spaced out and a K-Wire inserted to allow the new bone to grow in the spaces. She may by prone to arthritis in later years.
I was also told that in Recovery - the pain killing drugs she was given were too strong and she stopped breathing for a minute - until they reversed the effect with other drugs. I'm glad I wasn't there to witness that!
She was still groggy and on Oxygen when I saw her, but an hour later, a mug of tea, two sandwiches, a bar of Galaxy and a small bottle of lucozade and she was up on her feet ready to head home.
We have an appointment next Monday to fit a new cast (she can pick the colour!), and physio later on.
She should be able to go on her ski trip, but we were told that the cold temperatures may limit her time on the slopes. But she can be very stubborn determined when she sets her mind to it.
Back home, early to bed with some painkillers. Sleep never felt so good !
