Jiwe Kuu

Or sometimes Jiwe Kubwa. Means High Rock, or Big Rock. It is an amazing granite plateau high above Mwanza, scattered with room sized boulders of granite. I'm sure there is some clever geological explanation for it, but it looks utterly other worldly. At the right time of year, it is an amazing place to watch the sun go down - this, unfortunately, isn't the right time of year. But the view is still spectacular anyway.

From the rock you can see Lake Victoria stretch into the distance, usually flecked with small white sails. Practically under your feet is a village, you can see the roofs of the houses, the school, the rice paddys and other fields. People and animals are like ants. The kites soar all around, above and below, and it is all a bit vertiginous.

I've put some more images here
