Trams in Milan

The city tram network in Milan is quite extensive, with 17 lines and 1 interurban line (Milan - Limbiate), and at more than 115 km long is the biggest in Italy.

This particular model may look familiar, for it is identical to the legendary San Francisco streetcar. It is the Class 1500, introduced in the 1920's, many of them restored and still clunking and clanking along in operation today amongst their sleeker, more sophisticated, modern cousins.

The Milan network dates back to 1876, when the first horse-drawn tram began operation. In 1878 the first steam-powered tram was launched but by 1901 all the lines were electrified.
In 1910 the network consisted of 30 lines, and until 1917 was operated by several different companies, after which the municipality took over the network.
