Digging 18: Section
Wee Hannah, down a hole (technically a "sondage" ) drawing the sections.
Any vertical face, cutting through a context* is a Section.
Very useful things, section drawings, as they can show the relationships between different contexts.
For example, in the section facing us (sorry, I'm sounding like a lecturer!) there's a layer of large-ish angular stones just above half way down. It stops suddenly and to the right there's a less stoney fill. If you look with the eye of faith, the less stoney stuff has a U-shaped profile. It seems to be a robber trench, where someone has removed a wall to re-use the masonry. (The wall ran from where I'm standing towards the top of the picture.
The wall itself stood in a foundation trench, one side of which forms the right-hand edge of Hannah's sondage.
I've no idea if any of this makes any sense to anyone else!
I have found some video of one of the gigs Meles was on in Belgium, though, since a few people were asking on Sunday's blip. You might look at the first 2 minutes of this!
* A context is, essentially, anything caused by a single action. For example, a wall would be a context, as would its foundation trench, and also the backfill in the foundation trench. A layer of built-up rubbish would be a context. Contexts are the atoms of archaeology ;)
