France Day Three
A leisurely trip to Chateau Franc Mayne this morning for wine tasting. At 9.30am. But no worries, it was past midday somewhere in the world!
We were taken down into the cellars under the winery - they go for miles! It was very interesting, with all the lovely new barrels lying in peace, some of them behind bars! There was a large hole and we could look up and see the vineyard soil above - it was only about six inches thick, full of stones and spaces where the sun shone through. The thick limestone layer, retaining moisture under the poor soil makes it perfect for growing grapes, as they can survive a dry summer.
A tasting of a couple of their 'special' reds, and back on the boat for sunbathing and lunch. The predicted thunderstorms did not eventuate, probably because everyone brought coats and umbrellas this time. Actually, the ship provides big umbrellas and even walking sticks, so I've reverted to their one, which has a handy wrist strap.
After lunch JR went to a cooking demonstration, and learned how to make a cassoulet, while I socialised on deck and had a beer. It was very hot.
At night we had a 'gala dinner'. Six courses, several different wines and all good fun. But the best fun was the duo in the lounge afterwards - they played all 60s songs and everybody was up dancing. Yes, even us! Though my stiff kneed shuffles could not really be called 'dancing'...
There are loads of electric bikes on board, with a bike ride to tomorrow's Chateau - which we didn't book in for, preferring to travel by bus.
