Remembering

The focus this year, rightly so, is on the centenery of the end of the Great War and as we honour those who gave their lives in that conflict we remember those who have given their lives in subsequent conflicts.
Last night I spoke to a comrade of Guardsman Hicks from Newlyn who lost his life in Afghanistan and today I was struck by the solitary name, Thatcher, on a fresh granite plate on Caversham War Memorial, another youngster also killed in Afghanistan.

I enjoyed the service, it was good to stand and remember without having to participate as a wreath bearer or speaker.
Following the service it was off to the Prince of Wales pub for a couple of beers with fellow Veterans before heading off to Marks for more coffee, a change of clothes and the journey home.
Weather better for the journey home and we arrived home after about five and a half hours, both shattered.
