Monday: Remnants Of The Past

Our day began by being picked up from our accommodation by our guide and keeper for the next four days, Joe.  Haida Gwaii is remote and undeveloped, particularly on the southern island, Moresby Island.  The only way to see it is by boat, so that's what we're doing for the next few days.

We picked up 8 other travelling companions with whom we will be spending the next few days.  At the boat docking station we took control of our wet weather gear for the week - boots, waders, jackets and life vests.  

We left dry land near Sandspit on our Zodiac Explorer, with our first stop being Louise Island where you can still see the eery remnants of an old logging community.  Lunch, provided by Joe and eaten on the beach, we then  journeyed on to the first of a number of Haida villages we would visit.

Many years ago, the local indigenous Haida population became concerned that tourists were visiting their ancient sites and removing ancient artifacts and pieces of Haida history.  So they devised a system, still in place, whereby each site has two Haida watchmen, resident for the season, whose job it is to guide you and show you around.  You have to radio ahead for permission to land and they will then greet you and show you around their territory.  

Our accommodation for our first night was a floating lodge, complete with amazing dinner, provided by Sidney, who was the resident chef.

(I've been a week with either no wifi or really poor wifi - it's been a real tonic but I will be slow to backblip).
